Joe Lynn Turner- Dingbatz, Clifton, NJ 2/13/11

When I heard that Joe Lynn Turner was playing at Dingbatz in Clifton, I was excited and confused at the same time. I was excited because I only had to drive 3 blocks to see him (and apparently he only had to drive the same to get there), and I was confused because I figured that someone of JLT’s stature would be at a bit of a bigger venue. As it turns out my confusion was not without merit as the club was packed to such capacity that they had to send people away. He could have definitely filled a small theater. That however has nothing to do with his actual performance.

As for Joe’s performance, the mans talent is amazing, he has one of the best set of pipes in the business and he knows how to use them. His guitarist Karl Cochran is killer. It is an almost impossible task to have to cover Richie Blackmore’s work and while Karl is not quite there, he definitely comes close enough. The band played a set which consisted of mostly JLT era Rainbow classics mixed in with a few solo songs and a couple of Deep Purple cuts and Joe and his band blew the roof off the place! I hope the next time I see Joe it is with his band Over The Rainbow which features Richie Blackmore’s son Jurgen Blackmore and I hope they play a bigger venue as to be able to accommodate all of his fans.
