Mickey Thomas- “Marauder” album review

I will start off by saying that I love Mickey Thomas and think he has one of the greatest voices in the world. A lot of people write off Starship as corporate crap, but the fact of the matter is they made some great music and I know your afraid to admit it but every time “Nothing’s Gonna Stop Us” or “We built This City” come on the radio you turn it up and sing along just like I do.

Now about his new cover album “Marauder”. Cover albums rarely work. It’s just how it is. Most peoples renditions of classic songs are either to similar to the original to make a difference or so extreme from the original that it is a completely different song and loses the feel of the song. “Marauder” falls somewhere in between. Most of the songs bear resemblance to their original recordings but are just very flat and uninspired.

Track Listing:

1.) Gimme Shelter (Rolling Stones), 2.)SledgeHammer (Peter Gabriel), 3.) Maybe I’m Amazed (Paul McCartney) 3.) Maybe I’m Amazed (Paul McCartney), 4.) Champagne Supernova (Oasis), 5.) Rain (The Beatles), 7.)Across the Universe (The Beatles), 8.) Supermassive Black Hole (Muse), 9.) Voices (Russ Ballard), 11.) Delta Lady (Leon Russell), 12.) Hollywood Nights (Bob Seger), Tempted (Squeeze), 16.) Wah Wah (George Harrison)

– All tracks listed above are simply bland and uninspired. Not inherently bad, just lacking in flair.

6.) Chasing Cars (Snow Patrol)- I am not a very big fan of the original version of this song and the main reason is the guys voice just doesn’t do anything for me. Mickey’s version is pretty much the same as the original only with his great voice I have noticed for the first time that it is actually a very beautiful song. Probably my favorite on the album.

10.) Oh! Darling (The Beatles)- Very bluesy and soulful

13.) Life Is A Highway (Tom Cochrane)- Ok… Mickey took a real chance with this one. Total 360 from the Tom Cochrane version. Unfortunately his gamble didn’t pay off and the song ended up as complete crap. There is some rapper who seems to be the one leading the song and the song itself it some kind of dance mix. Just garbage.

14.) Money talks (AC/DC)- Your probably thinking the same thing I was “Mickey Thomas should not be covering an AC/DC song ever”. To his credit he rocked out pretty good. Even managed to put a little rasp in his incredibly smooth voice.

This review in no way diminish Mickey’s vocal ability. His voice is in top shape, it is just his songs choice and poor arrangements I have a problem with. Cover albums very rarely work and Marauder is no exception. Hopefully the next Starship album will meet expectations.
